An Art Update

Hey guys! Here's some of the things I've been working on for school.

Slip Cast Sculpture

In my sculpture class we learned how to make molds and then cast our objects in slip. We had to create a sculpture with some type of surface treatment and a pedestal that complement our object. I tend to favor pedestals that appear to be a part of the sculpture, so that's what I did!

Drypoint Print

I'm still working on this series, but here are some of the prints that I've made so far. Stay tuned for the final three prints!

As always, if you have any requests for posts or questions, let me know in the comments!

New on Society6!

I've been playing around with Illustrator and Photoshop for a little while and decided to try out a digital pointillism technique. The result is now up on Society6!

You can see this image in my store here.

I'm planning a tutorial on how I created this image, if you are interested in learning about it let me know!

Creating References for Fantasy Art

For the past couple of weeks, I have been working on recreating my drawing final in oils. I'm nearing the final detailing phase and that means creating more references and taking photos.

I started out with a shoebox lid and kinetic sand. I added in the glass beads that I used in the diorama that created the stone structures. I used the beads to form the altar-like structure in my painting that the runic markings would surround.
I chose kinetic sand because it's reusable and easy to clean up. Plus you can get it in different colors (they have glitter!) if you have trouble visualizing what your eventual piece will look like in the end when using the natural color that I've used. And it's fun to play with too.

I carved the runic markings in the sand using an Xacto knife. There was a bit of a learning curve when it came to writing in the sand - it kept collapsing in on itself the first couple of times I tried. I eventually got the hang of it and was able to get the runes to where I wanted them.

The next step was to take as many reference photos it took for me to be satisfied. It turned out to be around fifteen this time. Taking that many photos allows you to play around with composition and to see what reads the best. The pictures below show how different angles of the same object can change how you perceive it.

If you are creating a fantasy art piece (especially landscapes) I highly recommend building a diorama of your space before you start drawing. It helps transfer an image in your head into something more concrete. Having something concrete to draw from helps keep you organized while drawing. Once you have to basic structures down, you can always abstract them and make it your own.

Studio Update and Etsy Coupon

Greetings all! I hope you're having a great day. Today I'm in the studio bouncing between horses and paintings.

Both horses are portraits of Chincoteague ponies and have just been sealed. The larger one is a portrait of Poco's Starry Night and the little one is the beginning stages of a portrait Got Milk.

I have a ton of body models that are itching for a new coat. Does anyone have any requests for models for the Feather Fund auction? I'm already planning on doing Diamond Jewel's foal, but am not sure who else I want to do.

On the other side of my studio, I have this oil painting going. It's a version of my drawing final from this semester. I am in the process if adding in markings so the rocks resemble a gemstone like Tigers Eye.

On a side note - I've discovered an incredibly useful tool - a natural rubber pick up. It picks up the little pieces of eraser that likes to stay stuck in your canvas. I don't know why I haven't used it until now, I've had it since I got my foundation kit at the beginning of the year. But now I know.

And now for the Etsy Coupon - use HELLOSUNSHINE between now and June 11 to get 25% off of your purchase at Gyrfalcon Studios

A New Way of Working

Hey everyone! Whew, finals are over and I'm home for summer! I'm sorry for the radio silence the past couple months, but I had a lot more work this semester than I anticipated. Anyways, that turned out to be a good thing, because I discovered a new way of working in my flat art.

My drawing II class was intense. The smallest sized project we had to do was 18x24in. My final ended up being 8x4ft. However, this taught me something very valuable. I work really well when the space I'm working with in is very big. My final included creating a diorama of a space that we then would translate on to paper using mixed media. This was a great experience for me. I often hesitate to draw things from my head, because I can never get them just right. I found making a diorama really helps me visualize what I am trying to draw.

Now on to the pictures! My final was to create some type of space. I chose a sacred space and based it off of Stonehenge.

A picture of my diorama

Several pastels were killed in the making of this drawing. 8x4
This piece was created using pastels, watercolor, and acrylic paint. I am currently in the process of recreating this piece in oils.

I'm thinking of creating a series of these types of paintings/drawings. What do you think?

Watercolor Animals now on Society6

Thanks Kristian for introducing me to this website!

Society6 is similar to the website CafePress, except it seems more geared to artists. I have recently uploaded the digital fox watercolor that I posted yesterday. I have also uploaded a horse watercolor as well.

The cool part about this website is that not only can you order various sized prints of this artwork, you can get Ipad cases, T-Shirts, mugs, laptop skins, throw pillows, and many other products.

I plan on creating more watercolor animals and will be posting them on Society6. You can always access my Society6 page through the widget on the sidebar. Check it out!

I should also be posting a new custom on Etsy by Wednesday so keep an eye out for that as well.

Some Photoshop Practice

So I decided to get in some practice with Photoshop. This is what I created -

I used this tutorial to create the watercolor effect. It's now the home screen of my Ipad.

If there is anything you want me to write about let me know!

Long Time No Blog (Art School Series)

Hey guys! I can't believe it's October already! Well anyways in the last post I promised you pictures of some of my projects I've been working on.

Design I is a 2D design class. During the first half of the class we work with Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop. The second half of the class is dedicated to hands on work. Our first project involved making repeating patterns.

Drawing I is a class where we learn about all the intricacies of drawing from value and shading to perspective. We start out with still lives and near the end of the semester will begin working with models.

Visual Thinking is a class that prepares us to create our thesis when we become upperclasswomen. We are given a prompt and from that prompt we have to create a piece of art. We also have to do research to support our piece.

I've also had time to create some art for myself.

Playing with Illustrator

When i was a sophomore in high school, I took a graphic design class where I learned how to use Adobe Illustrator. Fast forward a couple of years and it was recommended that I get a subscription to Adobe Creative Cloud for college. To re-familiarize myself with Illustrator, I decided to create a cover for my planner.

This is what I came up with. What do you think?

Newest Flat Art

This week is going to be busy, I'm graduating tomorrow! So until I have some time to write more about creating a portrait model, here's some of my flat art -

I do plan on opening my Etsy store sometime soon. I have the supplies to make my own prints of my art, I just need to get the printer properly installed on my computer. Well - until next time!

An Update and an Owl

Hey everyone! Sorry for my lack of posting lately. Just wanted to let everyone know that commissions are coming along slowly but surely. Most of my Thanksgiving break will be dedicated to working on commissions, so keep an eye out for pictures!

And as a treat - a sneak peak of a painting I'm working on!

I Finished the Band Props!

Remember how I mentioned that I was making band props? Well I finally finished them!

All three standing side by side, with me in the middle...

A close up of Le Mis....

 and Phantom of the Opera...

and finally West Side Story...

They were definitely a challenge, but worth it! I'm very proud of how they turned out.

Some Still Life

Yesterday I had the wonderful opportunity to go to a portfolio workshop at Moore College of Art and Design. We worked on some still life drawings - here are a couple of my favorites from the day (sorry about the cell phone pics - my scanner isn't big enough to scan these).

The Dragon Garden

Nothing new on the horse front today, its a bit to humid for sealing. But I recently have gotten into the trend of fairy gardens. Instead of fairies though, I made a dragon garden. I made the cave and gold pieces out of polymer clay. I scattered around a few crystals too. I've had the dragon figurine for a while and have finally been able to put it to use.

Make sure to stay tuned for a video on how I paint my whites and detail my horses!
